Gerard Quinn was born in Irvine, Scotland of Irish/Scottish parents. He began his vocal studies at the Royal Northern College of Music in Manchester, and with sponsorship from The Peter Moores Foundation , furthered his studies at the National Opera Studio in London and in Vienna with Otto Edelmann.

He made his operatic debut as Rigoletto for English Touring Opera, and in the same year debuts followed at Glyndebourne Festival, Glyndebourne Touring Opera and Buxton Festival Opera. For Welsh National Opera he has sung Enrico  Lucia di Lammermoor,  Germont     La Traviata , Tonio  I Pagliacci ,  Alfio Cavalleria Rusticana and Peter Hansel and Gretel ; for Royal Opera Covent Garden , roles in La Traviata , Don Carlo , I Masnadieri  , Cherubin  and Les Huguenots ; Bath and Wessex Opera  Rigoletto , English Touring Opera  Marcello La Boheme and Zurga The Pearl Fishers.

Elsewhere in the U.K. he has sung  the title roles in Simone Boccanegra , Nabucco , Don Giovanni , Eugene Onegin and Gianni Schicchi as well as Conte di Luna Il Trovatore, Michele Il Tabarro  , Ford Falstaff ,  Sharpless Madama Butterfly and Conte Almaviva    Le Nozze di Figaro.


Gerard has worked with many great conductors including Bernard Haitinck, Gennadi Rozhdestvensky, Sir Alexander Gibson, Sir Charles Groves, Carlo Rizzi and John Mauceri; not forgetting directors who include Elijah  Moshinsky, Jonathan Miller, John Copley, John Dew, Tim Alberry, Richard Jones and Sir Peter Hall.


Gerard`s awards include the first Holland Park/American Express Award for Outstanding Operatic Talent for his portrayal of Renato Un Ballo in Maschera and the International Bel Canto Duet Competition Antwerp, with his wife soprano Heather Lorimer.


In the last few years Gerard has been specializing in the roles of Verdi , to date 16 , under the supervision of one of today`s great Verdi conductors, Sir Edward Downes, with whom he has performed Macbeth , Francesco I Masnadieri , Giacomo  Giovanna d`Arco and Egberto Aroldo.

He has a very busy concert career and has made many recordings and radio broadcasts.


In 1998 Gerard moved to Germany appearing in Stuttgart , Hannover , Lübeck , Nürnberg Wuppertal , Osnabrück and Kiel, where his roles have  included Germont , Sharpless , Giacomo , Rigoletto , Renato , Rodrigo Don Carlo , Iago Otello , Amonasro Aida , Di Luna , Carlo Ernani , Monforte I Vespri Siciliani , Scarpia Tosca , Eugene Onegin , Don Giovanni , Marcello , Michele , Gianni Schicchi , Figaro Il Barbiere di Siviglia , and Kowaljof The Nose .
